About The Mall Directory
The Mall Directory is an independent, free directory of U.S. shopping malls. It has full listings for 1,193 malls and shopping centers across 55 states and territories, with 39,778 stores, restaurants and venues mapped inside them. We aim to answer the practical questions people have before a trip — which stores a mall has, when it's open, how its holiday schedule differs, and which nearby malls are worth comparing — and to say plainly where our information comes from and how current it is.
What we add to the map data
Our starting point is open map data (see below). On top of it we:
- Check facts against official sources. 40 malls have overviews, official links and classifications checked against the property's own website, and 33 have regular weekly hours checked the same way (most recently on September 30, 2026). Each of those pages names the source and the date it was checked.
- Publish dated holiday schedules. Before major holidays we record the special hours malls publish (for 5 malls so far) in our holiday hours guide, each linked to the official schedule. We never carry a holiday schedule forward from a previous year.
- Compare and analyze. City pages compare their malls side by side, and our data pages — such as the most common stores in America's malls and malls with the most mapped stores — are calculated from the directory, with their method and limits stated on the page.
- Filter out records that can't help you. Map data includes many small plazas and stray records. Only listings with real evidence get a full page (see below).
How we check a listing
We open the property's official website and confirm it is the same place, then record only what that source supports: an original summary, the official store directory, classifications such as outlet or luxury, and the regular weekly schedule — not a holiday calendar, office hours or a single store's hours. Where official sources disagree, the listing says so instead of picking one. We don't infer a mall's type from its name, and a missing field means we don't have usable information for it.
What gets a full listing
A mall or shopping center gets its own page when it has at least one of: a checked or editorial description, 20 or more stores mapped inside its footprint, a mapped department store among at least five mapped stores, a Wikidata identity, or three practical details (address, phone, official website, usable hours). Other records appear on their state and city pages as plain rows with a map link. They gain a full listing automatically when their data improves, and records known to be closed are never presented as current shopping destinations.
Where the data comes from
Mall locations, store directories and many contact details come from OpenStreetMap contributors, used under the Open Database License (ODbL); the current dataset was compiled on July 11, 2026. Opening years and identities come from Wikidata, and photos from Wikimedia Commons under the license credited beside each one. Store directories are community-mapped and partial: a retrieval date tells you when we refreshed the map records, not that every tenant is still trading, so each page links the official directory where we have one.
Independence
The Mall Directory is not affiliated with any mall owner, operator or retailer. Listings, rankings and comparisons are not paid placements; rankings are calculated from the data described on each page. Advertising, where shown, is kept separate from listings.
Corrections
Spotted an error, a closure or a changed schedule? Every listing has a "Report an issue" link that emails us the mall's name and ID, or write to contact@themalldirectory.com. Please include a link to the official source if you have one. You can also improve the underlying map data directly on OpenStreetMap; fixes there flow into a future dataset update.
