The Mall Directory

The Most Common Stores in America's Malls

Bath & Body Works is the most widespread store in America's malls: it appears in 68% of the 347 malls with well-mapped store directories in our data, followed by claire's (65%) and Victoria's Secret (59%). Among food brands, Auntie Anne's is the most common (48%); among department stores, Macy's (41%).

Shares are the percentage of well-mapped malls with at least one mapped location for the brand — a measure of how often you'll find it, not of its total store count. Data compiled from OpenStreetMap on July 11, 2026; see the method and limits below.

Department and off-price stores

79% of well-mapped malls have at least one store mapped as a department store. OpenStreetMap uses that category for traditional anchors and for some off-price chains, so both appear here.

Closed chains still on the map

Map data lags store closures, sometimes by years. These chains have closed all or nearly all of their U.S. stores but are still recorded inside the malls below, so we leave them out of store directories, brand pages and every count on this site.

Closed chains still recorded inside mall footprints
ChainWhat happenedMalls still showing itSource
Forever 21Closed all of its roughly 350 U.S. stores in spring 2025 after a second bankruptcy; a new operator has since begun reopening a small number.117
JusticeAll stores wound down by early 2021 after the brand was sold in bankruptcy; it is now sold through Walmart.46
SearsDown to five full-line U.S. stores by late 2025, from about 3,500 at its peak.41
GymboreeClosed all of its stores in 2019 after a second bankruptcy filing.30
Christopher & BanksClosed its 449 stores in 2021 after filing for Chapter 11.28
The Body ShopShut down its U.S. operations and stores in March 2024; it returned in 2025 as an online-only retailer.16
Party CityClosed all of its 700-plus stores by early 2025.10
Rite AidClosed its remaining stores in October 2025 after a second bankruptcy.5

Where a store reportedly still operates (for example Sears at two of its last locations), we keep that mall's entry.

Method and limits

We counted named stores, restaurants and venues mapped inside the exact OpenStreetMap footprint of each mall with a full listing in this directory. To make shares meaningful, only malls with at least 30 mapped places count as well-mapped; a brand's share is the number of those malls with at least one mapped location for it. Spelling variants of the same brand are grouped, and each brand's type is the category most often used for it on the map.

OpenStreetMap is edited by volunteers, so coverage is uneven: some malls are mapped store by store while others record only their anchors, and very recent openings or closures may be missing. Treat the shares as the pattern across well-documented malls, not a census of every U.S. mall, and check a mall's official directory before a trip. For the malls with the most mapped places, see malls with the most mapped stores.
