Paseo Nuevo sits along lower State Street in downtown Santa Barbara, California, its Spanish Colonial Revival design and mid-block promenades echoing the city's own alleyway layout. Opened in 1990 at roughly 458,000 square feet, the city's redevelopment agency built it, with original anchors Nordstrom and a Broadway department store, later Macy's. Both anchors have since closed, leaving the former Macy's building, now called the Ortega Building, empty as plans move toward housing and a hotel.
