The Shops at Tanforan

The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, California, occupies a site with an unusual past: a horse-racing track until a 1964 grandstand fire, and before that a World War II detention camp where Japanese American residents of the Bay Area were held. The shopping mall itself opened in 1971, ten miles south of San Francisco, and later underwent a three-year renovation before reopening in 2005. Alexandria Real Estate completed its purchase of the property in 2022 and has announced plans to demolish the mall for a biotech campus.
