McFarland Mall opened on February 19, 1969, along Skyland Boulevard in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, replacing two older shopping centers as the area's main retail draw. It launched with Woolco and Gayfers as anchors and grew to four anchors, 40 stores, and a 12-screen theater at its peak. The 1980 arrival of the larger University Mall eventually chipped away at its business, and a steady decline through the 2000s, following the loss of two anchors, led to plans for redevelopment.
