Erected in 1828 on Westminster and Weybosset Streets in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, The Arcade holds the distinction of being the first enclosed shopping mall built in the United States. Its Greek Revival architecture earned it recognition as a National Historic Landmark in 1976, though the building fell into decline through the late twentieth century and closed for renovation several times. It reopened most recently in October 2013 as a mixed-use building combining residential units with commercial space.
