Monroeville Mall opened near Pittsburgh in 1969 and was billed at the time as the largest enclosed shopping center in the country, complete with an ice-skating rink and an elaborate clock tower. A 2003–2004 renovation expanded the property to over 1.4 million square feet across 170 acres, anchored today by JCPenney, Macy's, and Dick's Sporting Goods alongside a Cinemark theater. In January 2025, Walmart purchased the mall with plans to redevelop and demolish the site.
