Conover Square Mall occupies a converted piano factory in Oregon, Illinois, where the Schiller Piano Company once produced instruments from 1890 until merging with the Cable Company in 1936. Successor operations kept the 120,000-square-foot stucco building running until 1971, after which it was renovated into an indoor mall in 1975. The structure and its iron water tower base are contributing properties within the Oregon Commercial Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
