Metrocenter opened in 1973 along Interstate 17 in northwest Phoenix and grew into a regional enclosed mall with roughly 100 stores, a 12-screen theater, and a food court. By the time it closed on June 30, 2020, its remaining anchors were Harkins Theatres, a Walmart Supercenter, and a Dillard's Clearance Center, with former Sears, JCPenney, and Macy's spaces already vacant. Scenes from the film Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure were shot at the mall.
