The Mall Directory

Mapped Shopping Centers Per Capita by State

Across this directory's dataset, the United States has about 0.9 mapped shopping-center records for every 100,000 residents. The spread between states is substantial: Hawaii tops the list at 4.3 malls per 100,000 people — roughly 8× the density of last-place Arizona (0.5). California has the most mapped records outright (320), but population places it #32 per capita.

Methodology: counts are shopping-mall and shopping-center records in OpenStreetMap from the July 11, 2026 dataset (3,135 properties); populations are 2020 U.S. Census resident counts. This comparison reflects OpenStreetMap coverage as well as real-world retail density and is not an official mall census. The U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands are excluded — with populations under 200,000, a few tourist-district malls would top this chart on denominator size alone.
